The Journal of Biological Chemistry publishes papers based on original research that are judged to make a novel and important contribution to understanding the molecular and cellular basis of biological processes. Founded in 1905, it is published by the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and is published weekly both in print and online.

Research Articles:

  • Manuscripts may be submitted for consideration as regular papers or reports. Authors are urged to keep the length of regular papers to six printed pages or fewer.
  • Typically, five printed pages will total less than 30,000 characters, plus two figures or tables (if each figure or table is less than a quarter of a page).
  • For every additional figure or table, 2,000 characters must be removed from the text.
  • Must be single spaced, with the sections ‘Abstract’ through to ‘Discussion’ in a two-column page format.
  • Manuscripts should be ordered by the following sections: Title, Author(s), Institution(s), Running Title, Abstract, Introduction, Experimental Procedures, Results, Discussion, References, Footnotes, Figure Legends, Tables, Figures, and Supplementary Data (submitted separately).
  • Running title cannot exceed 60 characters.
  • Abstract limited to 250 words.
  • Abbreviations used in the text must be defined in a single footnote immediately after the first abbreviation is cited. The abbreviations of some important biochemical compounds, e.g., ATP, NADH, DNA, and amino acids in proteins, need not be defined.

 

Reports:

  • Formerly known as Accelerated Publications, Reports are concise but complete papers that present information on topics of exceptional novelty, significance and broad interest to readers of the JBC.
  • Reports can be no longer than five printed pages, including all spaces, references, figures and tables.
