Dr. Marty Crawford

Dr. Marty Crawford earned her PhD in biochemistry from Michigan State University, where she studied the in vitro and in vivo subcellular localization patterns of PGH synthase isozymes, enzymes which catalyze the committed step in synthesis of prostaglandins.  Her work included design and production of a series of isozyme specific antisera to determine the localization patterns of PGH synthases, the role of an endoplasmic reticulum retention signal in PGH synthase-1, and the role of amino acid residues unique to PGH synthase-2.  She also worked collaboratively in studies to determine the subcellular localization of cytosolic phospholipase A2, and to isolate and characterize cell surface prostanoid receptor subclones.  In the course of this work, she routinely used standard molecular biology techniques and immunofluorescence microscopy, performed mammalian cell culture, and conducted experiments using microinjection techniques. In post-doctoral studies, she worked to isolate and characterize genes from Arabidopsis thaliana that encode transcriptional adaptor proteins involved in a cold acclimation response.

In subsequent work experience, Dr. Crawford shared in the research efforts and management of clinical research studies in the areas of age-related genetic hearing loss (Department of Pediatrics) and pre-term delivery (Department of Epidemiology).  She also worked for a vaccine pharmaceutical company (Emergent Biosolutions, Lansing, MI USA).   In these various positions she prepared periodic research reports, participated in writing and reviewing grants, and researched and prepared technical reports for FDA quality assurance compliance issues.

Dr Crawford has over two years of science editing experience covering a wide range of biological science fields.
