Dr. Benjamin Samuels

Dr. Benjamin Samuels received his bachelor’s degree in Neuroscience from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD and his Ph.D. from Harvard University in Cambridge, MA. He then pursued postdoctoral work at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, MA and Columbia University in New York, NY.

His thesis work examined molecular and cellular aspects of cortical development and synapse formation. These studies resulted in publications in Cell, Neuron, and The Journal of Biological Chemistry (JBC). As a postdoctoral scientist, he focused on behavioral and pharmacological approaches to engineer animal models of depression and anxiety. This involved close collaboration with psychiatrists using translational approaches and ultimately resulted in a publication in Neuron.

In addition to his peer-reviewed manuscripts, Dr. Samuels has authored reviews in journals such as Nature Neuroscience, Nature Cell Biology, The European Journal of Neuroscience (EJN), and Neuropharmacology, as well as several book chapters.

Throughout his career, Dr. Samuels has been passionate about writing and has edited numerous manuscripts for non-native English speakers. He has pursued popular science writing and editing as a hobby and is very interested in promoting science education for the general public. He often speaks about being a scientist at local high schools in the New York City area. His areas of expertise include: neuroscience, animal behavior, pharmacology, genetic models of disease, molecular biology, cell biology, signal transduction, translational research, and medical reports.
