Dr. Richard Busing

Dr. Richard Busing has expertise in plant biology. He has a broad education and teaching experience in cellular, organismal, ecological and evolutionary biology. He received a BA in Biology with Honours from Earlham College in 1979, and a PhD in Botany from The University of Tennessee in 1985. He has held research positions at The University of Tennessee, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Oregon State University and federal laboratories associated with research universities.

Currently, his research interests lie primarily in the field of plant ecology. The dynamics of vegetation and ecosystems are of particular interest. He maintains several long-term studies of forests in biological reserves. Some of these studies were initiated almost a century ago. He also applies computer models to the study of vegetation and ecosystems at multiple spatial scales from sites to landscapes and regions. Such studies emphasise biological processes and ecological interactions of individual plants. This work is cited regularly by other researchers in the field.

Dr. Busing has edited hundreds of biological manuscripts ranging in subject matter from molecular to ecological and evolutionary biology. In addition, he has reviewed more than a hundred manuscripts submitted primarily to well-respected journals in the fields of plant biology, botany, ecology, forestry, natural resources and conservation. He serves on the editorial board of a major international journal in the field of plant biology. His list of peer-reviewed scientific publications includes more than 40 original papers in biological journals.

Areas of expertise: Plant science, Ecology, Evolution, Forest science, Conservation biology, Agriculture, Environmental science.
